FRONTIERS BEYOND BLOG
One of the holiest cities of India is mentioned as Prayag in the scriptures and later known as Allahabad and now again known as Prayagraaj. Located in the confluence of three life-giving rivers of India; Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati which flows as an undercurrent below the two other rivers. This confluence is called Triveni or Sangam. Hinduism believes that a dip at the Sangam cleanses the soul of all its crimes and sins. This old city holds a lot of significance owing to its Magh Mela which happens in the winter months and attracts large numbers of travelers and pilgrims alike.
The Kumbh Mela which is a spectacle by itself happens every 6 years and the upcoming Kumbh will be held in 2025 summers. The Maha Kumbh on the other hand is held every 12 years. It is believed that the Creator of the Universe, Brahma offered his first prayers at the confluence or Sangam after creating the world.
Prayagraj is situated in the southern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh and has a railway station that is 11 km away from the center of the city. It is 665 km away from the national capital of Delhi, 201 km from Lucknow the capital of Uttar Pradesh and 130 km away from the other holy city of Varanasi Frontiers Beyond can craft your perfect itinerary from any of these cities or more as per your convenience.
The everyday fast-moving wheels of time have very little impact on the slow-paced lifestyle of the city. We highly recommend hand-driven rickshaws for exploring and moving around the city. The sweet-natured drivers will be very happy to tell you their parts of stories and whatever little they know about the lulling but divinely beautiful land. They can take you to the Triveni Sangam where you can see the clear waters of Ganga mixing with the emerald green waters of Yamuna while Saraswati flows invisibly under these two rivers. To feel the cosmic energies of these rivers Frontiers Beyond highly recommends a boat trip at dawn or dusk. As the sun sets and takes a soulful dip in the rivers you will definitely feel that a part of your soul has been changed for good.
You can also take a visit to the Allahabad Fort which was built by Ashoka the Great and repaired by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the 16th century. The fort is now primarily taken care of by the Indian Army, but still, a part of the fort is open for tourists to explore its grandeur and glory. One of the notable features of the fort is the Saraswati Koop which is said to be the source of the river Saraswati.
Many tourists also visit Anand Bhawan, the old home of the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.
If India’s freedom struggle has a special place in your heart then you can visit Chandra Shekhar Azad Park. This park which is a sprawling garden of 133 acres saw the fierce gun show between famous revolutionaries who were fighting for the independence of the country. One of them being Chandra Shekhar Azad. After fighting for an hour, when the braveheart realized that he is too scarce of supplies, instead of surrendering he chose to shoot himself with his last bullet, thus proving true to his name “ Azad” which means to be free even in the face of death. A large statue has been erected for people to pay homage to this revolutionary. The park also houses the Flower show which is a treat for the eyes of nature lovers in the month of February.
If you want to go deeper into history then the Khusro Bagh which happens to house the tomb of Jehangir’s son Prince Khusro will greatly appeal to you. It’s a fine specimen of Mughal architecture. Other notable places are All Saints Cathedral, Mankameshwar Temple, Alopi Devi Temple, Badey Hanuman Temple and of course the famous Allahabad Court.
If you are someone who likes their artistic cords to be strung then Frontiers Beyond definitely recommends the Triveni Mahotsav and Shilp Mela which are fine displays of art.
No tour to Prayagraaj or Allahabad is considered complete without walking the lanes of Loknath where you get to savor some of the amazing street foods like kulfi falooda, dahi jalebi, Nirala’s chaat, bhang thandai and kimam khusboo paan. Even after that if you have some room left in your stomach, we highly recommend Hari namkeen’s masala samosa. If you can’t stuff it, then please pack it.
Now is the time to visit this beautiful divine land as Magh or January and February allow the city to adorn itself in its best colors and form. So, reach out to us to help you craft your perfect Prayagraaj or Allahabad trip.
