Devprayag: Witness the Sacred Birthplace of the Ganga

This beautiful sleepy town with not too many hotels, not so great infrastructure but one of the most eminent prayags or union points among the well-known 5 such prayags is awe-inspiring, soul-stirring and existence questioning. The Confluence or Prayag  of Bhagirathi and the adventurous Aalakanada, both of them making the bountiful Ganga is of huge significance in the context of Hindu Spirituality. As I watch the emerald beauty near the hilly and holy town of Rishikesh, the ever-giving mother, the divine beauty believed to be descending from the matted hair knots of Lord Shiva; Mother Ganga, I wonder what is the secret of its flow and the charming hue. That’s when the locals suggested to unravel the answer to this question, a visit to the Devprayag is a must. In the quest of the spiritual soul of India, we at Frontiers Beyond highly recommend a visit to this power-infused, yet quaint mountain-cradled town of Devprayag.

Devprayag

Reaching Devprayag from the capital city of India, Delhi is a matter of a few hours. Less than 300 kms away, you can plan to travel via the Delhi-Meerut road when the traffic is low. Choose the early hours and drive and from modern eateries like Mac-D to small time Dhabas, you can choose to stop for your breakfast at any place. If the journey feels overwhelming, we recommend you stop at the holy town of Haridwar or Rishikesh for a wisp of fresh air. Early morning you may choose to leave for Devprayag and the scenery can be captivating on the way. Many people find it difficult to make a night halt at Devprayag due to lack of different range of hotels. For them, taking a daycation to this beautiful town from Rishikesh can be quite suitable.

But those who feel the urge to understand, view, and experience the cosmic forces that are coming into existence all together to create the mighty river that has built the Gangetic plains, brought in silt- the fertile soil  for the whole of North India and makes it a place brimming with life and sustaining life, they might want to hang around for a night or two.

Gaumukh Glacier

The two tributaries, Bhagirathi which originates from the Gaumukh glacier in the high freezing  Himalayas and the not-to-be-tamed and fiery Alakananda river originating from Satopanth Glacier in Himalayas together come to form the river Ganga at Devprayag. The confluence can be seen very clearly at a particular point; the greenish Bhagirathi and blue-hued Alakananda ensure that both are distinguishable from each other. And there lies the answer to my question; the two form the emerald green Ganga lending it the characteristics of life, sin forgiving, life-sustaining and the true forebearer of abundance and prosperity.

Coming from two different lanes as if these two rivers, they distinctly set the tone of the town. Located in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand state of India, the town is very little and it can be traversed via foot easily. Each nook and cranny maybe small and empty but from most of the parts you can see the river and its sheen.

Meditation Prayagraj

For meditation enthusiasts we highly recommend sitting near the rock which locals believe that Lord Ram must have stepped. Take care of your belongings and let loose yourself and you shall be in a blissful moment allowing the cosmic forces that engulf this place and the divinity that hangs in the air teleport you to some distant spiritual land.

A small tip is that you may find many people coming to offer you seemingly free services like guiding around the history, geography, mythology, or spirituality about the place. You can get easily carried away with the generosity showered but they may end up asking you to pay something in return at the end. So it is always a good idea that you ask upfront about their charges in order to prevent any misconception and misunderstanding leading to bad blood during your visit.  Guide services should not cost you more than 200 or 250 INR. So don’t end up paying hefty charges.

Raghunath Ji Temple

You can visit the Raghunathji temple or simply amble around the suspension bridge overlooking the confluence. All the places have a mystic divinity hanging over them and great locations to sit and reflect on life and its essence in the mighty laps of the Himalayan town.

But spirituality is like food for the mind, you also need food for your stomach. There are some not amazingly delicious but definitely worth trying sweets and savouries available year round in Devprayag and we highly recommend you try them. Try the Khoya Mithai, Singori and Bal mithai which are almost available all throughout the town in all the streets. The winter months can be a bit difficult in the town so we highly recommend trying the summer months to escape the heat of the plains of India.
